FREQUENTLY ASKED

The useful answers,
without the hunt.

What Wave Yard is, what is current and what is still being built.

Is Taylor’s Wave open?

The Town of Woodfin has scheduled Taylor’s Wave’s grand-opening event for October 23, 2026. The larger Riverside Park project has a separate timeline. Check current Town access and operating notices before visiting. Opening update checked October 6, 2026.

I’ve seen people surfing Taylor’s Wave. Does that mean it is officially open?

No. People using the river feature and the Town officially opening the completed project are two different things. River passage does not confirm that the construction area, shore access, parking or visitor amenities are open and ready. Check the dated status in the First-Timer Guide, then confirm the Town’s current notice before visiting.

Will Taylor’s Wave cost money to use?

The project is planned as a public river-wave feature at Riverside Park. Wave Yard has not found a published opening-day fee, reservation or pass system; check the Town’s operating rules when they are released.

Can I bike from Asheville to Taylor’s Wave yet?

Not on a continuous greenway yet. Buncombe County says the Riverside Drive/NC 251 design is being revised after Helene. Funded Woodfin sections are expected around summer 2029, but about 0.41 mile near The Mill at Riverside and Elk Mountain Road was removed from the funded project and remains a future, currently unfunded connector. That means “2029” should not be read as a promise that every connection from Asheville will be complete. See Getting there without a car and verify the entire route before riding. Last checked September 20, 2026.

Where will I park, change and use a restroom?

Riverside Park is at 1630 Riverside Drive, but construction can change parking, routes and available amenities. The expanded park is planned to add parking, changing rooms and restrooms; those future amenities are not all available now. Use the Parking + Arrival guide and check the Town update on the day you go.

Can I watch Taylor’s Wave if I don’t paddle?

Yes—Taylor’s Wave is expected to draw spectators as well as paddlers. The expanded park is planned with spectator space, but current viewing access, accessible routes, shade, seating and restrooms must still be confirmed. Start with the Spectator Guide, then use After—or Instead for nearby coffee, food, art, recovery and companion options.

Can I bring a dog or watch from shore?

The expanded park is planned with spectator space, but final pet rules, accessible viewing routes, shade and seating details are not yet confirmed. Use the Dogs guide or Spectator Guide for what is known, and check posted rules on the day.

Is Silver-Line Park open?

The Town currently reports Silver-Line Park temporarily closed for river-debris removal. Swim Guide may still label a water-quality monitoring location as Silver-Line Park; that sample name is not a park-opening notice.

Is debris still a concern when kayaking the French Broad River after Helene?

Yes. Cleanup is still underway, including PVC pipe washed from the Woodfin IPEX facility. MountainTrue and Associated Press reporting in fall 2026 document pipe still in and along the river, including material embedded in banks and sediment. Debris is a physical-hazard question separate from bacteria readings or river level: a good water-quality result or ordinary gauge reading does not mean a route is clear. Check current access and cleanup notices and use the River Desk debris advisory before going. Checked October 8, 2026.

Are the weather and river numbers live?

Yes. The homepage requests current National Weather Service and USGS Asheville-gauge data when the page opens and refreshes it every 15 minutes while the page remains open. Readings are information, not a safety rating.

Is Wave Yard an official Town site?

No. Wave Yard WNC is an independent, neighbor-built resource and is not affiliated with the Town of Woodfin or RiverLink. Official-source links are identified throughout the site.

How does a place get into the Local Guide?

It must fit a real Taylor’s Wave day. Wave Yard looks for timing, distance, parking, wet-or-muddy practicality, accessibility, dog and family considerations, spectator usefulness and what happens when plans change—not merely a nearby address.

Can businesses partner with Wave Yard?

Yes. Relevant lodging, food, wellness, outdoor and visitor businesses can apply to become a founding partner. Paid relationships are labeled, inclusion is selective and sponsorship never changes safety information.

How does the Gear Swap work?

People can submit river-related items as For Sale, Wanted or Free. Wave Yard reviews each submission before publication but does not inspect gear, process payments or join the transaction. Approved listings expire after 30 days unless renewed; use Contact to report a problem or mark an item SOLD or FOUND.

Can I store or rent something now?

Not through an Asheville-side provider Wave Yard can currently verify near Taylor’s Wave. French Broad Outfitters reports itself closed, so its older storage and rental pages should not be treated as current services. The Yard is testing demand for limited kayak and SUP storage but is not offering it yet. See Shuttles + Boat Storage for the current logistics picture.

How can I report an update or barrier?

Use the Contact page to share a dated access change, incorrect listing, accessibility barrier, dog note or other firsthand information.
