Taylor’s Wave River Conditions
Turn readings into a workable plan.
Check current French Broad River flow, gauge height, water temperature, water quality, access, and Taylor’s Wave status in Woodfin.
Taylor’s Wave Current Conditions gives you the live readings. The River Desk explains what those numbers mean. For project status and first-visit planning, start with the Taylor’s Wave First-Timer Guide.
COUNTY ACCESS NOTICE
County river-park closure begins October 10
Buncombe County has announced that its river parks will close at 7 a.m. Saturday, October 10, because of forecast rainfall. The closure covers Walnut Island, Ledges Whitewater, Bent Creek, Hominy Creek, Glen Bridge, Corcoran Paige and Alexander. Reopening will follow a County assessment and announcement.
Check separate Town of Woodfin updates for Riverside Park, Silver-Line Park and Taylor’s Wave; this County notice does not establish their status.

TAYLOR’S WAVE REPORT
The whole answer at a glance.
Until the wave opens, status remains under construction. Once operating information is published, this desk will pair official updates with on-the-ground context.
Flow, wave shape, eddy access and the appropriate experience level.
Parking, entry, exits and temporary access changes.
Session rotation, scouting, giving others a turn and posted rules.
Official alerts and time-stamped community observations when available.
Nearby parks, food and dry-land options when conditions do not cooperate.
READ THE FLOW
What the gauge tells you
Flow is volume: cubic feet of water passing the gauge each second. Gauge height is the river’s measured stage at that station. Water temperature affects cold-water risk and comfort—but none of these numbers, alone, declares the river “safe.”
Town planning guidance says flows up to about 1,500 cfs may be rewarding for intermediate paddlers at the future wave; above that, the feature becomes increasingly powerful and advanced. That is planning guidance, not a promise about today’s conditions.

Four non-negotiables
- Wear the right PFD.Properly fastened, U.S. Coast Guard–approved and suited to the activity.
- Use a designated access.Do not improvise a path across construction areas, private land or unstable banks.
- Match conditions to skill.High water brings faster current, debris and fewer forgiving choices. Kayakers at the wave need a reliable roll.
- Check more than one signal.Gauge, weather, closures, your group and what you see at the river all matter.
FLOW + WAVE SHAPE
What does the flow mean at Taylor’s Wave?
The gauge gives you a number. The wave turns that number into a shape — but flow alone never tells you whether the river is safe, whether access is open, or whether the feature suits your skill level.
Design and testing reference points
Project reporting from the wave’s design and testing describes roughly 950 cfs as a smoother, greener face; around 1,100–1,200 cfs as the point where the lip begins to break; and roughly 2,000–2,250 cfs as a stronger “sweet spot” where the center steepens and shoulders form for more advanced freestyle use.
Treat those as design reference points, not operating or safety ratings. Taylor’s Wave is still under construction, river conditions change, and real-world behavior can differ from modeling and testing. Once the feature officially opens, Wave Yard can compare these reference points with official guidance and time-stamped on-river observations.
WATER QUALITY
A sample is not a safety promise.
MountainTrue’s Swim Guide reports bacteria results from monitored recreation sites. In season, many French Broad locations are sampled weekly—not continuously. Check the location, sample date and source notes before using a result, especially after rain.
POST-HELENE DEBRIS
Good readings do not mean the channel is clear.
Cleanup is still underway along the French Broad, including PVC pipe washed from the Woodfin IPEX facility during Helene. Recent reporting from MountainTrue and the Associated Press documents pipe still embedded in banks, sediment and debris piles, with changing water levels revealing additional material.
Water quality and river level answer different questions. A recent bacteria sample or ordinary gauge reading does not prove a route is free of physical debris hazards. Check current access and cleanup notices, pay attention to what is visible at the river, and avoid sections where hazards are uncertain.

Only things that fit the day.
This space holds zero to five genuinely useful items: river instruction, cleanups, paddling events and hyper-local Woodfin happenings. If nothing belongs here, we leave it empty.
DESIGNATED ACCESS
Three names. Three different places.
Silver-Line Park
Town status: temporarily closed for river-debris removal. Do not use it as a put-in until the Town posts a reopening. Swim Guide may still use Silver-Line as the name of its nearby water-quality monitoring location; that sample label does not mean the park is open.
Open map ↗Riverside Park
Public park at 1630 Riverside Drive and the Taylor’s Wave construction site. The park may be available during portions of construction, but access, parking and amenities can change. Check the Town update before relying on it.
Open map ↗Ledges River Park
County closure begins at 7 a.m. October 10. Check the County’s reopening announcement before planning to use this access.
Buncombe County river access north of Woodfin and downstream of Taylor’s Wave. It is a separate park several river miles away, so confirm distance, current conditions and shuttle logistics before making it the take-out.
Open map ↗Pearson Bridge River Access
Updated September 16, 2026. The City of Asheville continues to identify this as a public river access point. The adjacent commercial property at 704 Riverside Drive changed ownership in September 2026, so Wave Yard is monitoring parking and wayfinding for any changes.
The property ownership change does not establish a closure of the public river access. Check official access updates before going, and review Shuttles + Boat Storage for provider status and logistics.
Access status can change during construction and Helene recovery. Check the Town of Woodfin and French Broad Paddle Trail before leaving home.
